Hi
I know that this maybe a long shot. I am researching my father's sailing career. He had a dealership for Hughes in Port Huron, Michigan in the late 1960s, called International Sails, then Carroll Yacht and Marine. They had a demo Hughes 38 named La Vite. Any ideas where I can find information on it? Year built or where it is now?
Thanks,
Stan Carroll, SKICARROLL@aol.com
Technical
Hughes 38 Keel Bolts
The Hughes 38 has 9 cast in stainless steel keel studs with a 5/8” NC thread. They cannot be removed because they were formed in a “J” shape and cast into the lead/antimony keel at the time of manufacture. When the keel was bolted to the bottom of the fibreglass hull the joint and studs were sealed with polysulphide sealant. The studs are fitted with heavy stainless steel flat washers, and stainlesss steel 1 1/8” wrench size nuts. We believe the correct torque for the nuts when the threads are coated with stainless steel (not copper) “Never-Seize” lubricant is 120 ft lb.
Since it is impossible to remove the studs for examination, and dropping the keel simply to examine them is a very big job, we suggest that the studs can be “proof-tested” by removing the nuts and applying lubricant to the threads, ensuring the heavy flat washers are in place, and then torquing them to 120 ft lb. If they don't break they are probably in good condition. (Because the lead keel is too soft to hold tapped threads, if one was to break the most reasonable repair would be to “sister” the studs by adding more [new] studs... by drilling a hole down through the fibreglass section at the bottom of the hull into the lead keel about a foot or more, and then cross drilling into the keel to meet the end of the new stud so that a “T” section cross-piece can be added to the end of the new stud.)

Galatea V
Galatea V was raced extensively by the previous owner from Shelburne, Nova Scotia all along the Nova Scotia coast and the New England states. She was fitted with a replacement keel because the original builder of the kit used a non-standard lead-filled welded steel construction. The present owner feels the new keel is heavier than the original design specification, but probably makes the boat sea-friendly in the open ocean.
